Our approach to training and development

  • The RCSLT will assess the impact of commissioning on the way SLTs work and on how they are trained
  • We will provide a range of CPD opportunities for members at all stages of their career
  • We will continue to publish guidance for SLTs and support workers on clinical and professional matters, including Communicating Quality 3, published May 2006
  • We will develop a toolkit for speech and language therapy managers to help in workforce planning.

Continuing guidance and support

Your employer and the HPC both require that you undertake a range of CPD activities.

The RCSLT is helping members meet these requirements and get the most out of their professional development by providing new tools: the CPD diary and the CPD toolkit.

We are developing new professional development activities, including short courses, which will link to the HPC categories and the Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF) levels and dimensions.

Education and training for SLTs and support workers

The RCSLT is introducing a process of annual certification for providers of pre-registration training for speech and language therapy, to ensure high standards are maintained.

We are working with higher education institutions to develop national standards for practice-based learning and to develop a curriculum to respond to the HPC's requirements for standard setting in education and training.

We are helping other organisations set up new pre-registration programmes for SLTs and training for support workers.
