Demonstrating our value
The importance of demonstrating value for money is currently dominating the news agenda and the RCSLT has been supporting the engagement of our members in this by gathering evidence for The Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) Establishing the Evidence project.
It is essential for any publically-funded service to show how it is delivering tangible outcomes for its users and making a positive impact on important public goals, like educational achievement, economic participation and social inclusion. We also believe it is essential government sees how health and social care services can help transform people’s lives.
We know from our evaluation that speech and language therapy helps reduce the cost of care over the long term. Helping a stroke survivor learn to swallow again may mean they can leave hospital and begin to rebuild their lives at home. Helping a child with their speech and language has a profound impact on their education and their ability to participate actively in society.
I am on the QIPP advisory group. There has recently been a call for further submissions, particularly in relation to children’s services. Is your service a beacon of best practice that others can learn from? SLTs were very successful in getting five examples published in phase one of ‘Establishing the evidence’, so I urge RCSLT members to think about how they improve quality and reduce costs, and complete the guidance and forms below.
