Distance courses for returners
This will help them meet the HPC's requirements for 'additional study' prior to becoming registered.
There are nine units, each requiring approximately 10 hours of study time. The units allow you to vary your study periods. Each unit has specific aims, 'learning outcomes', reading material, tasks and self-assessment questions that you must answer in order to complete the unit.
You submit the self-assessment questions to the RCSLT as evidence of completion of each unit. When you complete all units successfully the RCSLT will issue a certificate of completion to include with your HPC application for registration.
Most therapists work through the course materials either before or during their period of supervised practice. The course does not cover all areas of clinical practice, but it will bring you up to date with professional practice, legislation, and new developments in areas such as continuing professional development, evidence-based practice, user involvement, caseload management and new models of working in education, health and the social care sector.
Once you complete the course you may find you require short courses on specific clinical areas that allow you to update your knowledge and skills further. The RCSLT has a list of short courses on offer through its own programme and programmes based in universities and voluntary sector organisations throughout the UK. However, you may find that the course is enough along with your period of supervised practice.
The course is available online, with tutorial support via the following universities:
