Vote for a UK symbol for communication access

Organisations across the world have been working together for almost a year to discuss launching a communication access symbol for the UK. The RCSLT, The MND Association, Communication Matters, and The Stroke Association have been part of this group..

The aim is to create a recognisable symbol for businesses and services to display, showing that their staff are trained on how to support people with communication difficulties and that they are meeting minimum standards.

A consultation is now underway to guide the decision as to which symbol will be used and we are inviting you, not only to take part in, but to share a survey with others so everyone can have their say and make a difference to those with communication difficulties.

We have tried to make the consultation as accessible as possible but recognise that some people may need additional support to help them complete it. Please use what method is appropriate to help your service users to participate, such as supported conversation, symbol support or a Talking Mats framework.

The initial closing date for the consultation is 9 June 2017, so please spend a few minutes out of your day to vote for your favourite symbol. If you are feeling especially creative you can even design a new one.

We are running a social media campaign on our @RCSLT Twitter feed and Facebook page each Thursday using the hashtag #CommunicationSymbol so please feel free to share our tweets and posts with your networks over the coming weeks. Alternatively, if you may want to create your own messages signposting people to the survey, so to help you out, we’ve created some sample tweets and posts, which you can download.

Thank you for supporting this initiative.
