Guernsey wins Speech and Language Therapy Week competition

2nd March 2006

Many thanks to all the departments around the UK who submitted entries to the Bulletin for the 2005 Speech and Language Therapy Week media competition.

It is clear from your entries that many of you put a lot of effort into the events you held during the week and managed to have fun while breaking down the barriers to communication.

Congratulations go to Guernsey's SLTs for their tremendous effort in attracting the most extensive media coverage for their Speech and Language Therapy Week activities, winning the £500 prize.

Speech and language therapy was the main topic of press, radio and TV coverage during the week. Department head Barbara Evans (pictured above, far left) appeared on BBC Radio Guernsey to talk about the events and aims of the week; ITV News covered the official opening of Princess Elizabeth Hospital's new speech and language therapy waiting area by Minister for Health, Deputy Peter Roffey; Barbara gave live interviews to BBC Radio Guernsey and Island FM during a 'children's party' at the Western Community Centre; and BBC Spotlight featured Breaking down the barriers to communication workshop activities aimed at Year 9/10 pupils.

Local papers, The Guernsey Press and Globe also gave extensive column inches to the week's activities.

On winning the competition, Barbara said, "I'm thrilled for the department, as we all put in so much hard work to make the Week such a success. I'm still receiving positive comments from professional colleagues, patients and the general public about all our activities and the high media coverage we achieved during the Week.

"It really was worth the effort as it raised the profile of communication impaired children and adults, and highlighted ways in which the public can help," she added.
