Where SLT leaders and managers should be involved in strategic roles

SLTs also have an opportunity to develop strategic roles and leadership skills via their engagement on advisory boards.

Examples include:

England: A speech and language therapist has filled an AHP Consultant post in LD and dysphagia in Tees, Esk and Wear Valley NHS Trust (a mental health and learning disabilities Trust in the North East).

Wales: SLTs in Wales have seats on the following strategic advisory boards which require high level leadership skills:

• Welsh Therapies Advisory Committee (WTAC) (statutory committee of the Welsh Assembly)
• All Wales Speech and Language Therapy Managers Committee
• Local Health Boards (LHB) - each LHB must have a therapy representative on its board
• Trust Executive Committees (TEC) - many Trusts have a therapy seat on their TEC (the operational committee of the Trust's Board).
