Financial advice for students

The following document details the support you can get if you attend a health professional course in England, regardless of where you live in the UK.

Financial help for healthcare students (6th edition)

If you attend a course in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland similar arrangements apply, but you will need to consult the relevant national authorities:

  • Wales: The NHS (Wales) Student Awards Unit. Tel: 029 2026 1495
  • Scotland: The Student Awards Agency for Scotland. Tel: 0845 111 1711
  • Northern Ireland: The Department of Learning, Training and Employment, Student Support Branch. Tel: 028 902 577 77
If, having taken up your entitlement to a bursary and student loans, you are still in financial difficulty, apply to your university or student union for information on help in the form of hardship funds.

Child tax credit is available for all families with children, including students. Funding through the NHS Bursary Scheme is not taken into account when calculating your child tax credit entitlement. For more information call the Tax Credit Helpline tel: 0845 300 3900 or visit the Inland Revenue.

If you are a student on a clinical placement, contact your NHS Childcare Coordinator who may be able to assist you in accessing NHS-supported childcare. See Improving Working Lives
