Further information on the Medical Research Council framework for developing and evaluating complex interventions

Speech and language therapy interventions can be considered ‘complex’ interventions, because they often have multiple dimensions that interact (for example, the heterogeneous groups that are targeted by an intervention and the variability in outcomes). This can make developing and evaluating them challenging. You can view the framework here.

The Medical Research Council (MRC) has developed a framework to help researchers address such challenges by outlining a series of stages and tasks that need to be considered. These guide the researcher all the way from the initial conception of your intervention and the literature underpinning it, through to evaluating its implementation in real-world practice.

This framework will be used to structure the parallel sessions. By research champions selecting the broad stage of the framework in which they feel they are currently working in, or aspire to be, the workshop session will give attendees an introduction to the tasks involved at the stage and information on how to develop the skills to achieve these. In addition, research champions will identify how they will share the knowledge gained from this workshop with their networks.
