Webinar details

This webinar was for those who are  interested in, or work with looked after children.

There is a high prevalence of speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) among looked after children. These needs are often unidentified. Left unidentified and unsupported, SLCN risk a range of negative outcomes in relation to behaviour, mental health and wellbeing, the formation of positive relationships and friendships, educational attainment, and future employment and life chances.

With their unique clinical expertise in speech, language and communication, speech and language therapists have a crucial role to play in supporting looked after children. They can identify SLCN, support others working with looked after children in awareness of SLCN and how to respond appropriately, and provide direct therapy to those looked after children who need it.

One of the key people in any looked after child’s life is their Virtual School Head. Virtual School Heads exist in every local authority and fulfil the local authority’s duty to promote the educational achievement of its looked after children.

This webinar brings together the National Association of Virtual School Heads and a speech and language therapist from Children’s Integrated Speech and Language Therapy Service for Hackney and the City to:

  1. highlight the role of Virtual School Heads;
  2. increase awareness of looked after children’s communication needs and how speech and      language therapists can support Virtual School Heads to meet those needs;
  3. showcase good local practice of Virtual School Heads working with speech and language therapy services.
