The latest issue of Bulletin explores the evolving technologies in today’s digital world. What do these changes mean for the speech and language therapy profession now and in the future?
In this issue of Bulletin, we explore how we use technology in the digital world, sharing how SLTs are embracing innovation to enhance speech and language therapy.
Advances in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), including the iPad, have already transformed lives. Throughout RCSLT, we’ve seen the rise of speech therapy apps and voice banking. Now, with the emergence of generative AI, we stand on the brink of even greater change. While some view it as just another tool, like the printing press or the internet; others believe its impact on humanity could be existential.
In our cover feature on page 22, we explore the ongoing debate around ‘screen time’. Particularly the use of digital media by children and young people. The evidence we share in this issue shows that excessive screen time may be one of several factors affecting children’s early language development, from birth to the age of six. As experts in children’s speech and communication, SLTs are in an ideal position to support parents and carers in managing their children’s digital media use and nurturing their language skills.
On page 30, we present a survey of SLTs who are already exploring generative AI in their work, from drafting emails to therapy ideas. Others are thinking about the potential risks, benefits and the need for training in areas such as data safety and consent. Also in the magazine, you can read about midlife career options with an SLT-turned-coach on page 39.
As Swallowing Awareness Day approaches, check out page 42 for creative activity ideas and insights from a team of SLTs who experience life with swallowing needs.
