New report outlines vision for transforming support for children with communication needs in Scotland

26 August 2025

RCSLT Scotland and the Association of Directors of Education in Scotland (ADES) have published a new report, Transforming support for children and young people with communication needs in Scotland: A partnership approach.

The report is the outcome of a national round table which brought together leaders from across health and education to build consensus on how Scotland can better meet the needs of children with speech, language and communication needs. It was developed with the support of ADES, RCSLT, the Scottish Directors of Allied Health Professions and the Scottish Children’s Speech and Language Therapy Leads Network, and with input from the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA).

The report highlights the critical role communication plays in learning, wellbeing and life chances and responds to the rising demand and growing pressure on services. The group agreed a common vision and practical principles for change. Key recommendations include a stronger focus on prevention and early intervention, sustainable funding models, and true collaboration across services. Case studies from across Scotland show how partnership approaches can make a real difference.

We are encouraging leaders in health, education and children’s services to use this report as a tool for local planning and service development. By embedding the principles it sets out, partners can build stronger, more sustainable support for children and young people across Scotland.
