RCSLT is inviting members to take part in a consultation on draft artificial intelligence (AI) principles for safe and ethical practice in speech and language therapy.
AI is already appearing in many workplaces and members have told us they want clear, practical support to help them judge when its use is clinically appropriate. These draft principles provide a framework to support professional decision-making, alongside HCPC standards, local governance and organisational policy.
They focus on ensuring that any use of AI in speech and language therapy is:
- transparent and accountable
- clinically justified and safe
- equitable and inclusive
- compliant with information-governance requirements
- centred on human relationships and professional judgement
The principles are intended for use by clinicians, teams and service leads when evaluating tools, managing risk, planning services or contributing to organisational policy. They are not detailed practice guidance or a replacement for clinical judgement.
Why take part?
Your feedback will help us make sure the principles:
- reflect real-world practice across settings and populations
- are clear and practical to use
- support innovation while protecting the people we serve
You do not need to comment on every section. Both general and detailed responses are welcome.
How to respond
Consultation closes at 5pm on Wednesday 18 March 2026.
