Apprenticeships in England

The RCSLT is actively supporting the development of apprenticeships, as they relate to speech and language therapy. Read our position statement.

On 17th July 2017 we were delighted to be joined by 50 speech and language therapists, Skills for Health and the Institute for Apprenticeships at a joint launch workshop with the RCSLT and 2gether NHS Trust. The presentations from the event are available here.

New consultation open until noon 15th November

In November 2017 the Institute for Apprenticeships approved the SLT Expression of Interest (EoI). Since then the Trailblazer Group has been working on the development of the SLT pre-registration degree apprenticeship standard. The group has worked hard to ensure that the standard is consistent with, and has as a basis, the newly published RCSLT curriculum guidelines.

The draft standard has now been published for consultation and is open until noon on 15th November 2018. It is available here on the Skills for Health website. Please do complete the consultation questions. This consultation is only about the content of the standard. It sets out the knowledge, skills and behaviour required of a newly qualified SLT. It is not about implementation issues or about how apprentices will be assessed.

We have developed a list of the most frequently asked questions about the consultation. Take a look at them here.

Further information for employers

If you are interested in keeping in touch with developments, to be notified about the consultation and when it is possible to employ SLT apprentices, please register your interest at healthcare.trailblazer@skillsforhealth.org.uk. Further information on healthcare apprenticeships from Skills for Health. Read more information from the Institute for Apprenticeships about the process for the development of apprenticeships.

Further information for potential apprentices

The SLT apprenticeship standard is still being developed, so it’s not ready yet. It’s not possible to become an SLT apprentice at the moment. It is likely to be a further 12-18 months in development. We will keep updating here with the latest progress so please do check back regularly. In the meantime here are some FAQs about the apprenticeship.
