Identifying carbon reduction priorities for SLTs

21 April 2026

This Greener AHP Week (20-24 April 2026) we are sharing the top carbon reduction priorities for the speech and language therapy profession

Greener AHP Week is an annual initiative aiming to raise awareness of how AHP services can become more environmentally sustainable and support the NHS’ net zero ambition. To mark Greener AHP Week NHS England are running a series of webinars around carbon reduction and sustainability.

Last year, speech and language therapists took part in UK-wide research conducted by NHS England to identify carbon reduction priorities for the each of the allied health professions. These are the priorities which were identified for the SLT profession during the research:

  1. Increase awareness in the profession of the carbon impact of our work and our role in working more sustainably.
  2. Ensure that every contact with patients includes the principle of right care, right place, right time, to achieve the best service user outcomes in the context of sustainability.
  3. Reduce the carbon impact of our offices.
  4. Review resources to reduce the use of unnecessary paper and disposable or single use items.
  5. Prioritise prevention where possible.
