Join us to celebrate the launch of the 4th edition of Language of Examinations, a practical resource supporting professionals to make language more accessible across classroom learning, teaching, assessment and examinations for learners who may experience linguistic barriers.
Building on three decades of Language of Examinations and its foundations in deaf education, this new edition brings together expertise from across deaf education, speech, language and communication, specific learning difficulties, education, assessment and inclusive practice. It reflects developments in research, policy and professional practice and extends the focus beyond examination language to consider how unnecessary linguistic barriers can be identified and reduced throughout a learner’s educational experience.
A key development in the 4th edition is its emphasis on Accessibility by Design: considering language accessibility from the outset in classroom materials, instructions, tasks, assessments and examinations, alongside guidance on language modification where this is required. The aim is not to simplify learning or lower expectations, but to ensure that unnecessary language demands do not prevent learners from demonstrating what they know, understand and can do.
The 4th edition is co-badged by the British Association of Teachers of Deaf Children and Young People (BATOD), the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT), Speech and Language UK, the Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties (PATOSS), the British Dyslexia Association (BDA), Afasic, Communicate-ed, the National Association for Special Educational Needs (nasen), Moor House School & College CIO, and NAPLIC – professionals supporting language and communication (DLD) and is supported by the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS).
This webinar brings together the organisations and professionals involved in and supporting the 4th edition, recognising our shared role in improving access for deaf learners and others who may experience language-related barriers, including learners with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), autism and specific learning difficulties (SpLDs).
The webinar is for qualified Teachers of Deaf Children and Young People, speech and language therapists, teachers, teaching assistants, SENCOs/ALNCos, specialist teachers and assessors, examination and assessment professionals, and others who have an impact on learners with language-related needs.
