RCSLT Wales shines a light on speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) amongst young people who have offended at the Senedd (English and Welsh version)

On 5 December, RCSLT head of Wales office, Pippa Cotterill gave oral evidence alongside Kim Jenkins, a highly specialist speech and language therapist and clinical lead for youth justice at Swansea Bay University Health Board, as part of a spotlight inquiry by the Equality and Social Justice Committee at the Senedd.

The inquiry focused on the extent of speech, language and communication needs amongst young people who have offended, or are at risk of offending in Wales. We were delighted that the committee chose to prioritise this issue on which we have long campaigned. We also heard evidence from other key stakeholders such as the NHS, youth offending team managers, the Magistrates Association and the third sector.

Pippa and Kim’s evidence session was streamed live on Senedd TV. You can also view our written evidence for the inquiry and keep updated on developments via our twitter feed @RCSLTWales.

RCSLT Cymru yn y Senedd yn sôn am anghenion lleferydd, iaith a chyfathrebu ar gyfer pobl ifanc sydd wedi troseddu

Ar 5ed o Ragfyr, rhoddodd Pippa Cotterill, Pennaeth Swyddfa Cymru RCSLT, dystiolaeth lafar gyda Kim Jenkins, arbenigydd profiadol iawn mewn therapi lleferydd ac iaith ac Arweinydd Clinigol Cyfiawnder Ieuenctid ym Mwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Bae Abertawe, fel rhan o ymchwiliad gan Bwyllgor Cydraddoldeb a Chyfiawnder Cymdeithasol Senedd Cymru.

Canolbwyntiodd yr ymchwiliad ar faint anghenion lleferydd, iaith a chyfathrebu ymysg pobl ifanc sydd wedi troseddu neu sydd mewn risg o droseddu yng Nghymru. Rydym yn falch iawn fod y pwyllgor wedi dewis rhoi blaenoriaeth i’r mater hwn y buom yn ymgyrchu arno dros gyfnod maith. Mi glywson ni hefyd gan randdeiliaid allweddol eraill tebyg i’r GIG, rheolwyr timau Troseddu Ieuenctid, y Gymdeithas Ynadon a’r trydydd sector.

Cafodd sesiwn tystiolaeth Pippa a Kim ei ffrydio yn fyw ar Senedd TV.  Fe gewch chi wylio’r sesiwn yn ôl yma. Gallwch hefyd weld ein tystiolaeth ysgrifenedig ar gyfer yr ymchwiliad yma a chael yr wybodaeth ddiweddaraf ar ddatblygiadau drwy ddilyn ein ffrwd trydar @RCSLTWales.
