Updated working with interpreters guidance published

2 September 2026

We’ve published updated guidance on working with interpreters

Following a consultation in 2025, we’ve updated our guidance on working with interpreters, with contributions from HCPC, ASLTIP and other expert stakeholders.

This guidance outlines best practice for working with professional interpreters in speech and language therapy services and aligns with professional standards and legal obligations under the Equality Act 2010.  It includes information on identifying the threshold for working with an interpreter and how to deliver the interpretation, whether this is done face-to-face, via video link or telephone. There’s also information on pre-session planning, post-session debriefing and written translations.

We hope this new guidance will be helpful to members when working with professional interpreters to support service users in their home language, ensuring an equitable service for all.

Working with interpreters webinar

In January 2027, we’ll be hosting a webinar with ASLTIP to understand the challenges members can face when trying to access interpreting services. We’d really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to complete our survey. Your responses will be extremely helpful in informing the content of the webinar.
