The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) has announced the launch of a major new funding opportunity to improve services for people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) (PDF).

The NIHR’s Health and Social Care Delivery Research Programme is accepting applications on improving access and use of services for people with speech, language, and communication needs and aims to commission ‘high quality, well designed research… [that] provides findings which meet the needs of NHS and social care managers and leaders’.

The RCSLT, which has helped to shape this funding call, is delighted the NIHR have recognised the urgent need for large-scale research into services for people with communication needs. We are equally pleased to note the prominence of our research priorities within the call.

Commenting on the news of the funding, the RCSLT’s head of research and outcomes Amit Kulkarni said:

“This is a major opportunity for our research-active members. We’d like to thank the NIHR for including us in the development of this call and enabling this generous level of support for speech and language therapy research.

“Areas of interest outlined in the funding brief are broad and go across the lifespan, and we encourage our members to apply for this funding to help advance our understanding of effective clinical services for people communication needs across the UK.”
